In our chronological tour through the Bible, we come now to the coming of the Messiah.
The Advent of Jesus the Christ (Christ means "anointed King" -- an office, not a surname) was resisted by both church and State. Both the Roman civil rulers and the Jewish religious leaders knew their power was threatened by a righteous Servant-King. The powers plotted against Him from womb to tomb.
Empires and false religions have always been at war with Patriarchy and the Seed of Abraham, which is the Messiah.

An argument can be made that the Romans really didn't know who Jesus was or what He really stood for.
Luke 23:34; John 15:21; Acts 13:27; 26:9; Ephesians 4:18
But that same argument might suggest that the Jews didn't either. They knew in one sense, but not in another. This is the nature of self-deception.
Sooner or later, every Christian who reads the Gospels asks, " Why was Jesus executed? Wasn't He "the Great Teacher?" Why would anyone want to execute the author of so many inspiring Hallmark™ Cards? Besides, didn't Jesus tell His followers to pay their taxes? What possible reason could the government have had for treating Jesus like a criminal? In the face of "the Zealots," a popular political group bent on overthrowing the empire by force and violence, Jesus even said "Put your sword back in its place, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword." (Matthew
26:51-52).
Wouldn't the government be happy if everyone was willing to pay their taxes, obey the soldiers, and put away weapons of revolution?
